and Mould Testing | Mould inspection
means to thoroughly inspect a home, apartment, condo,
office, or commercial property for the presence of water problems, higher
than normal levels of mould spores, or serious levels of mould infestation
or mould contamination.
|
Mould testing
means collecting
direct physical samples of visible moulds, including indoor air
samples in rooms, attic, crawl space, basement, heating & air
conditioning equipment & ducts. These mould samples sent to a mould
laboratory culture and identification | |
A
Certified Mould Inspector |
can be grown by a mould lab in
mould culture plates [viable mould testing] to produce full- grown mould
colonies for mould analysis & identification by a mould laboratory.
Mould may begin growing indoors when mould spores -
-
float inside through windows or doors
-
enter the home or building through the fresh air
intake of the heating/cooling system
-
are brought indoors on clothing or shoes
- and land on moist organic surfaces (like wallboard,
carpeting, ceiling tiles, cubical dividers, upholstered furniture, glues)
and germinate.
What should be kept in mind while inspecting for possible mould
infestation?
Where to look
The following areas need to be checked for presence of toxic mould---Damp
areas such as basements and attic, and areas where water seepage or
condensation may occur are prime growing areas for moulds. Most moulds
will reproduce quickly if the temperature and humidity conditions are
right.
The most likely places for moulds to grow are:
-
Crawl
spaces and exposed soil under buildings and homes
-
Flood-prone, wet, or damp basements, especially if
carpeted or furnished
-
Cold outside walls and window mouldings where
moisture is likely to condense
-
Sinks, shower stalls, non-refrigerated vegetable
storage areas and garbage pails
-
Console humidifiers and cool mist vaporizers
Common sources of indoor moisture may lead to mould
problems:
-
Damp basement or crawl space
-
Flooding
-
Humidifiers
-
Leaky roofs
-
Overflow from sinks or sewers
-
Plumbing leaks
-
Sprinkler spray hitting the house
-
Steam from shower or cooking
-
Wet clothes drying indoors or clothes dryers
exhausting indoors
Warping floors and discoloration of walls
and ceilings can be indications of moisture problems.
